Video Capsule Endoscopy (Pill Cam)

Endoscopy is the examination and inspection of the interior of body organs through an endoscope. An endoscope is a device using fibre optics and powerful lens systems to provide lighting and visualization of the interior of a body organs or cavity. The portion of the endoscope inserted into the body may be rigid or flexible, depending upon the medical procedure.

Some parts of the small intestines cannot be viewed through a regular endoscope, but can be viewed through a new technique called Video Capsule endoscopy or Pill Cam:

There are certain conditions under which Medicare is able to rebate you and the Specialist if you require a ‘pill cam’, which may reduce the amount by which you are out of pocket, even for non-health fund members. If you are eligible, your out of pocket expenses are likely to be approximately $250, with Medicare rebating the facility approximately $2,000 for the cost of the Pill Cam and the examination fee, directly.
