Dr James McAlister is an Eye surgeon with subspecialty experience in treating disease of the Cornea and Ocular Surface Disease as well as Cataract and Refractive Surgeon. He graduated with Honours from the University of London. His specialist training was based in London at world’s largest Eye Hospital, Moorfield’s and was a TFC Frost clinical research fellowship recipient which took him to Institute of Ophthalmology and Schepens Eye Research Institute affiliated to University College London and Harvard University, Boston respectively looking at Gene therapy strategies in corneal disease.
His training continued with a 16 months Fellowship in Cornea, External Eye disease and Refractive Surgery at Moorfield’s Hospital followed by one year Fellowship in Cornea and External Eye Disease at Southampton Hospital.
He is strongly grounded in research with a background which centres on; the evolving role of Corneal Crosslinking and its efficacy in treatment of progressive disease, various refractive interventions for Keratoconus, and dry eye disease.

His refractive interests are balanced between personally tailored Laser and Implant correction to maximise patient’s visual outcomes. His expertise also encompasses standard and complex cataract surgery.
Dr McAlister was previously a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland before taking up the position of Associate Professor at Griffith University. Dr McAlister has published numerous peer reviewed journal articles. He regularly presents his work nationally and internationally. His clinics also provide a regular teaching commitment to medical students and Optometry graduates.
